“I I started gymnastics when I was 5 years old and immediately fell in love with the sport. I began working towards the elite track when I was 12 as a pre-elite gymnast for a couple of years.
I decided to move away from home when I was 12 to pursue my elite career at a facility that could better accommodate my dreams. I pursued this track due to the fact that my recruiting year for college was stocked full of future Olympic hopefuls like Simone Biles, Madison Kocian, etc. I knew that in order to stand out I needed to pursue a career in elite gymnasts even though a part of me always knew I would most likely never go to the Olympics.
I moved from Houston to Dallas Texas where I was one of Kim Zmeskal’s gymnast at Texas Dreams Gymnastics. From age 12-17 I struggled through many trials and tribulations from getting multiple injuries to getting the twisties, however I finally made junior elite when I was 14. When I turned 17 I had the pleasure of qualifying as a senior elite gymnast, and was lucky enough to get an invitation to compete at the U.S. Women’s World Team Selection Camp in the summer of 2014. During my time as an elite gymnast I had many overuse injuries and not many colleges were hot to trot to recruit me due to my injuries. However, right around the time I had just turned 15 and seemed to have caught the attention of Valorie Kondos Field. When I was young it was always my dream to be a Georgia Bulldog because Courtney Kupets was one of my idols. Although, when I was getting recruited their program wasn’t doing all that well, but Alabama was on top of the world that year. Thus, my dream changed to Alabama however two girls from my gym had already been offered full ride scholarships from there. I switched my gears to other universities and I felt lost in the chaos because I didn’t have a guide nor did my parents really know much of anything about the recruiting process.
Kim encouraged me to look into UCLA, and thats where I met the incomparable Valorie Kondos Field. UCLA invited me out for an unofficial visit and she ended up offering me a full ride scholarship on the spot while I was sitting on the couch in her office that once belonged the great John Wooden. I would’ve accepted the offer on the spot, however I had another unofficial visit lined up for Utah. After I visited Utah they did not offer me a scholarship until they came to watch me at practice.
Ultimately, my heart lead me to UCLA where I was on their team from 2015-2020. My time at UCLA was filled with many ups and downs, however I learned many life lessons along the way and I am very proud to call myself a Bruin.
